The Ethics of Generative AI

As AI tools become more prevalent, students and experts begin to question the ethics of using such AI.

Generative AI continues to seep its way into everyday life, with models like ChatGPT becoming much more advanced and accessible. As a result, one can’t help but wonder: should we be more cautious about how we use AI?

In our district, people’s opinions are divided.

“Students are becoming too reliant on AI, and I feel like they’re really not putting in the effort a student is supposed to put in,” sophomore Alexis Santos expressed.

On the other hand, some see the benefits.

“I don’t think AI is necessarily bad, as long as you’re using it the correct way,” junior Saniya Donald argued.

Students are conflicted about the use of AI in places such as school, with some valuing the effort that comes with integrity and others arguing that generative AI could be used to assist students in tasks such as studying.

These perspectives show the overarching debate that even experts are having nowadays.

“Many schools and universities have moved to online forms of assessment, and it seems likely that generative AI might cast doubt on the integrity of them, and we might see a reversion to handwritten examinations as a solution,” a study published in the Journal of Medical Ethics states.

The usage of generative AI has begun to raise concerns, especially concerns regarding integrity. Professors find themselves abandoning the convenience of online assessments due to the risk of AI usage by students.

Another research argues for the benefits generative AI can have on learning.

“Generative AI has the potential to contribute to this social learning process of setting shared goals, performing tasks together, exploring possibilities, and conversing to reach agreements,” expert Mike Sharples stated in an article for Taylor & Francis Online.

Sharples sees the benefits of the usage of generative AI and argues for the implementation of such AI into classrooms and workplace environments.

These two experts, knowledgeable enough to publish a paper on the topic, disagree on the merits of generative AI. Generative AI has its benefits and its consequences, with people all around the globe disagreeing on how it should be used or whether it should be used at all.
