On January 11, Timothee Chalamet, who starred in “Marty Supreme”, superseded five other nominees, including Leonardo DiCaprio, for the Golden Globe Award for “Best Performance by a Male Actor.” This is monumental—a change signifying Timothee Chalamet having the same level of talent and influence, if not more, as DiCaprio during his 90s prime, which means he might serve as the new successor for the brilliant teenage heartthrob that made DiCaprio. However, this hypothesis won’t be truly tested until the Oscars, where Chalamet is likely to receive a nomination for his latest performance in “Marty Supreme”.

"I'm really in pursuit of greatness. I know people don't usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats,” Chalamet said in an SAG Award Speech.

Will he prove he measures up to the giants, or will he fall short of the expectations set upon him? As of now, “Marty Supreme” is the most direct way to determine his greatness. His role as Marty Mauser, an ambitious ping-pong player who spends the entire movie avoiding the messes he made in pursuit of his goals, offers insight into Chalamet's likelihood of receiving an Oscar award.

Even without deep analysis, it’s apparent that Chalamet left a personal mark on viewers through his exhibition of a wide range of emotions, creating tension that leaves the audience on the edge of their seats.

“The end credits felt like a giant exhale,” sophomore Stella Laning remarked. “I would never want to be friends with someone like Marty Mauser, but watching him succeed was strangely gratifying.”

His character is extremely immoral and sleazy, but Marty’s drive is so commendable that you still end up rooting for him. This is no easy feat—making an otherwise unlikable character likable is a signpost of Chalamet being “one of the greats”.

Chalamet puts so much passion into his performance that it’s unnecessary to care about ping-pong at all—you receive just as much enjoyment from watching how angry he gets when not getting his way, or the desperate lengths he will go to for the opportunity to play competitive table tennis.

Additionally, Chalamet is so dedicated to thoughtfully and carefully portraying his characters that he spent an entire year mastering ping-pong for the role of Marty. This level of dedication isn’t unusual for him —in his 2023 film “A Complete Unknown”, Chalamet learned how to sing and play harmonica in a rigorous five-year course. All in all, this guarantees approval and attention from critics and judges.

It’s getting hard to ignore the young man’s talent as he rises to greater roles, which he fulfills with great diligence. Indeed, he still must overcome the dogma of Oscar judges opting to award more experienced nominees. However, his stellar performance offers much hope to the notion. For now, fans are simply excited about the possibility of Timothee Chalamet’s talent and hard work being formally recognized.
